ABOUT ME

Here are a few biographical details about myself.

canstockphoto3059723aCAREER:
1982-1985  Development Engineer
1985-1986  Software Engineer
1987-now   Mathematics Teacher

After leaving university I worked for 3 years as a Development Engineer with a company that designed and built scanning sonar equipment and undertook other underwater engineering projects. Among the projects I worked on was rescue-submarine sonar equipment for the American Navy and a fast helicopter deployment sonar for the Swedish Navy.

Then I worked for 2 years as a Software Engineer with the Hydrographic Survey department of the same company. I was involved in writing software for offshore positioning projects. Although I was primarily working onshore I did travel offshore to take part in some major projects. This included jacket installations for the BP Ula field, Total North Alwyn B and Shell Leman F platforms. Some photos of my work offshore can be seen in the gallery.

During my time working in industry I gained extensive experience of working with computer hardware and software. I continued my interest in these areas when I moved into education. I have been actively involved in developing the use of GLOW in my own school and have set up an open source learning management system for staff to deliver courses. I am interested in how technology can enhance and improve learning and teaching.
